After your ridge augmentation surgery, it’s essential to follow these post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing and achieve the best possible outcome:

1. Oral Hygiene:

  • Avoid brushing the surgical site for the first 24 hours. After that, gently brush your teeth, being careful to avoid the area of surgery.
  • Do not rinse or spit for the first 24 hours. After 24 hours, start rinsing your mouth gently with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 2-3 times a day, especially after meals. Avoid vigorous rinsing to prevent disturbing the surgical site.

2. Diet:

  • Stick to a soft, non-irritating diet for the first few days. Foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and smoothies are recommended.
  • Avoid hot, spicy, acidic, and crunchy foods that could irritate the surgical site or dislodge the graft material.
  • Do not consume extremely hot foods or beverages as they can increase swelling and interfere with the healing process.

3. Pain Management:

  • Take any prescribed pain medications as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can also help manage discomfort.
  • Applying an ice pack to the outside of your mouth near the surgical site can help reduce swelling and numb the area. Use the ice pack in 15-minute intervals (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off) for the first 24 hours.

4. Bleeding:

  • Some minor bleeding or oozing is normal after surgery. If bleeding occurs, gently bite down on a clean gauze pad for 10-15 minutes.
  • Avoid activities that might increase bleeding, such as vigorous rinsing, spitting, or using a straw.

5. Swelling:

  • Swelling is common and typically peaks within 48 hours after surgery. To minimize swelling, use ice packs as described above.
  • If swelling persists beyond a few days or seems to worsen, contact our office for further advice.
  •

6. Activity:

  • Rest and avoid strenuous activities for at least 48 hours after surgery. Keeping your head elevated when resting can help reduce swelling.
  • Avoid bending over or heavy lifting, as these activities can increase blood pressure and cause additional bleeding or swelling.

7. Sutures:

  • If sutures were placed, they might be dissolvable or may need to be removed at a follow-up appointment. Avoid touching the sutures with your tongue or fingers.

8. Monitoring:

  • Watch for signs of infection, such as increased pain, swelling, redness, or discharge from the surgical site. A fever may also indicate infection. If you notice any of these signs, contact our office immediately.

9. Bone Graft Care:

  • If a bone graft was used, it’s crucial to avoid disturbing the area. Do not press on the graft site with your tongue, fingers, or other objects.
  • Avoid wearing any removable dental appliances that rest on the graft site unless your surgeon has specifically advised otherwise.

10. Follow-Up:

  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so we can monitor your healing progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

11. Additional Tips:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, but avoid using straws, as the suction can dislodge the graft or cause bleeding.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, as both can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.

If you experience unusual symptoms, such as severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection, please contact our office immediately. Your successful recovery is our priority, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
