For Parents of a Child Patient:
Oral Care: For the first 24 hours, avoid brushing the area where the surgery was performed. After 24 hours, gently clean the area using a soft-bristled toothbrush. For infants or toddlers, you can use a damp, clean cloth to gently wipe the area.
Rinsing: If your child is old enough to rinse, begin using warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 24 hours after the surgery. Help your child rinse their mouth 3-4 times a day, particularly after meals. For younger children, you can use a syringe to gently irrigate the area with water.
Diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days. Provide your child with soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, or smoothies. Avoid giving them hot, spicy, acidic, or crunchy foods that could irritate the surgical site.
Pain Management: Follow the prescribed medication instructions for managing pain. Over-the-counter medications like children’s ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be used as directed by your healthcare provider. If your child seems uncomfortable, use cold compresses on the outside of the mouth near the surgical site to help reduce pain and swelling.
Bleeding: Some minor bleeding or oozing is normal. If bleeding persists, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze pad for 10-15 minutes. If heavy bleeding continues, contact our office immediately.
Activity: Keep your child calm and limit their physical activities for the first 24-48 hours to avoid disrupting the healing process. Encourage quiet play, reading, or watching TV.
Monitoring: Keep an eye on the surgical site for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge. If you notice any of these signs, contact our office immediately.
Follow-Up: Make sure to bring your child to their scheduled follow-up appointment so we can monitor their healing and address any concerns.
For the Patient (Teen or Adult):
Oral Care: Avoid brushing near the surgical site for the first 24 hours. After that, gently clean the area with a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritating the surgical site.
Rinsing: Begin rinsing your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 24 hours after the procedure. Rinse 3-4 times a day, especially after meals, to keep the area clean.
Diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days. Eat foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or smoothies. Avoid hot, spicy, acidic, or crunchy foods that could irritate the area.
Pain Management: Take prescribed pain medication as directed, or use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your mouth near the surgical site for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off can help reduce pain and swelling.
Bleeding: Minor bleeding or oozing is normal. If bleeding persists, gently bite down on a clean gauze pad for 10-15 minutes. If heavy bleeding continues, contact our office.
Activity: Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24-48 hours to help the healing process. Avoid any activities that could cause increased blood flow to the head, such as bending over or heavy lifting.
Monitoring: Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or pus. If you notice any of these signs, contact our office immediately.
Follow-Up: Attend your follow-up appointment as scheduled so we can check on your healing progress and address any concerns.
